Grammatical Metaphor
Grammatisk metafor
Grammatical metaphor recasts processes as things and qualities as nouns, packing information densely. Instead of 'fordi prisene økte' (because prices increased), academic Norwegian writes 'som følge av prisøkningen' (as a result of the price increase). This is the hallmark of advanced written register.

Clause (verb-based) → Noun phrase (nominalized) with prepositional modifier

Common Mistake
Fordi oljeprisen gikk ned, kuttet de budsjettet.
Som følge av nedgangen i oljeprisen ble budsjettet kuttet.
Using clausal (verbal) style where nominal style would be more appropriate in academic writing. Converting the causal clause to a prepositional phrase with a nominalization creates denser, more formal prose.
